Groups that are purpose-driven depend on volunteers for everything from fulfilling their mission statement to fundraising to even performing basic day-to-day office duties. Many organizations have no paid staff and operate only through a group of dedicated volunteers.
So how can you attract & encourage awesome volunteers?
Show Appreciation
Volunteers need to feel appreciated. The tried-and-true methods of an in-person or a handwritten “Thank You” are still important. But so is sharing appreciation on social media. Social media channels are excellent ways to bring attention to volunteers.
Focus on the Why
Take a few minutes while welcoming a volunteer to explain what their assignment is and focus on why it is important. A few extra minutes of explanation will give the volunteer more insight into why they are needed and therefore create a better volunteer experience.
Keep it Flexible
Flexibility in scheduling & tasks will allow organizations to attract a wider variety of volunteers, which will help to build a strong volunteer pool from which to draw from.
Manage Expectations
Don’t expect too much of your volunteers, especially new ones. A volunteer assignment should be clearly explained and should not go over the stated amount of time.
Utilize Volunteer Skillsets
Volunteers want to arrive for assignments that are well prepared and that utilize their skills & interests. Be respectful of them and match them appropriately to best use their talents and earn their loyalty. That way they keep coming back to help!
