A fresh school year deserves a fresh look at your back to school plans. Whether your school has begun classes or you have a few weeks, there is still time to start the year off on the best foot possible. Here are six tips to get you started.
Plan a Back to School Event
Many schools have a traditional back to school night, which could include some face-to-face time with their newly assigned teacher, students seeing their school for the first time, and a lighthearted way to get everyone geared up for the year. To keep this fun and engaging, try an ice cream social, a food truck night or a meetup under the football field lights.
Get Your Welcome Messages Designed and Printed
Create and keep welcome signage up at key entry points and bulletin boards for the first 30 days, give or take. Make sure your message is inclusive and makes everyone feel they have a place at the school. You never know who might be looking—such as a young new student as she awaits her parent pickup.
Welcome Teachers and Staff, Too
Cohesion at your school starts at the top, and PTAs can help build this by creating a social event just for teachers and staff. New staff should be welcomed just as a new student would. This is also an opportunity to get some of the “what I did this summer” conversation out of the way so that on day one, staff can get down to business.
Foster Parent Involvement
Although there may be a little stress and anxiety for parents coming into a new school year, most parents are excited for their children. They are starting off with a fresh outlook after a long summer break, and this may pose an opportunity for you to get them involved. Find ways to engage parents early on. Even if they don’t become members, they could still lend a hand when help is needed.
Meet with Key Staff
Ensure the lines of communication are clear to and from the principal and other key faculty members. Discuss any new ideas for fundraising, COVID protocols that may impact your mission, and goals for the year.
Get Organized for a Great School Year
This is a great time to review your group’s bylaws, schedule important meetings and fundraising dates. In addition, it’s a great time to log into your MoneyMinder account to see where your books stand at the start of the year. How are your bank accounts looking? Any outstanding balances? Adjustments to budgets and forecasts that need to be made? If you need assistance we’re always here for you.
We wish you the very best this school year!
