How Can Your Group Benefit from Using QR Codes?

Welcome to the Two-Minute Treasurer’s Tip Podcast. I am your host Cyndi Meuchel with MoneyMinder where we’re hoping to make your life as a volunteer way easier.

Paige writes: A fellow board member would like to use QR codes as a way to get people to pay for various things for our PTA. Is this OK and how does it work?

Good question. QR codes are making a come-back right now. Covid has played a big role in that. These kinds of codes are basically the real-world equivalent of a clickable link. By the way, QR stands for Quick Response Code.

The idea is that essentially, you’re going to create an online page whether it’s a survey you want somebody to take, a web page you want them to go to and read something, maybe a form they fill out, or an ordering page where they buy something. Anything you want people to quickly access. Then save the URL to that page in a QR Code generator. These are free. Your end user can then point their smartphone camera at the code and they will be automatically taken to the web page you created. It’s easy peazy.

As a matter of fact, if you’ve been out to eat lately you might have noticed that some restaurants are putting their menus online and posting the QR code on table stands. That way the server doesn’t have to continually clean menus and you aren’t touching a menu that lots of other people have had they hands on. They’re just pointing you to it online.

You might consider using QR codes for fundraisers. Or perhaps on handouts that kids take home and give their parents so they can get further instructions or information. You could use them for individual items at a silent a silent auction to provide additional information. You might even use them at events for check in or registration so people don’t have to queue or stand in line.
