Following is a transcript of this episode of the Two Minute Treasurer’s Podcast.
Welcome to the Two-Minute Treasurer’s Tip Podcast. I am your host Cyndi Meuchel with MoneyMinder where we’re hoping to make your life as a volunteer way easier.
Justin writes: Some folks are asking for our EIN number. Is it safe to give that out? And what do we need to provide folks for tax purposes regarding donations?
Justin, your EIN number is also sometimes referred to as your tax ID number. This is public information. You could go to the IRS’s website and get that information freely, so I wouldn’t worry about giving that out. It’s also the number that you would provide on, say, a thank you letter, for someone who gives you a donation.
Similarly, it’s also on your prior tax returns. If you’re a tax-exempt organization somebody could look up those prior tax submissions online. It’s public information and it’s going to have your EIN number on it. So don’t worry about giving that number out. Hopefully that answers your question.
