Spring PTA Activities

Have the post-Spring-Break blues set in around your school? The weather is getting nicer and everyone wants to be outside, but we all still have hard work to do. Here are 10 great spring activities for your PTA to work on.

1. Spring Fling Carnival

You can make this event what you want. Some schools do art shows, fundraisers, sock hops or silent-auctions—really the sky is the limit when celebrating spring at school. A Spring Fling is often the largest or one of the largest PTA fundraisers of the year with local businesses and families generously donating to become sponsors. To raise additional funds, you can sell tickets

at the door, have a raffle and charge for games and refreshments.

2. Teacher Appreciation

Mark your calendars! Tuesday May 5, 2015 is not just Cinco de Mayo, it’s also teacher appreciation day! Some schools even like to stretch this day for a whole week. A personal gift is always appreciated, or try coordinating efforts amongst a whole classroom for a fun group photo or a wreath made of gift cards, (each family donates one to a favorite store.)

3. Mother’s Day Celebration

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10, 2015 and makes a wonderful opportunity to fun raise and fundraise! Some schools honor mothers simply with sweet brunches like “Muffins for Moms”. Other schools hold raffles and small gift or plant sales.

4. Walk-a-thon

Spring is an excellent time for a walk-a-thon. Hopefully the weather is more pleasant and you can catch a glimpse of spring flowers as you are doing your laps. Walk-a-Thons are important events as they are school wide and empower students to raise money through donations. Bake sales are often a big part of the morning of walk-a-thons so everyone can “fuel up”.

5. Attend a Regional PTA Conference

Some States or regions hold annual PTA conferences. It’s a way to network, build camaraderie, get inspired and learn about important topics. There are interesting workshops and breakout sessions and specialized training for those holding offices.

6. Community Service Projects

Community Service involvement is important for any leadership group. While it is customary to consider this type of service around the holidays, there are some very important activities that you can participate in during the spring. If the weather is fair, head out to your local park/beach/or other public site to pick up trash. Looking for an indoor activity? Try making greeting cards to send to your local veteran’s hospital.

7. Garden

Studies show that growing a school can boost academic achievement, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage community development. A garden is an incredible spring project that requires at least 6 months to a year of careful planning, but the result is an outdoor classroom paradise. Involve the principal and teachers and make sure to have a sustainable action plan in place.

8. Family Night

Is the evening nice enough for an outside movie? How about a sand art competition on the basketball court with colored sand? What if you hosted a reading night with a camp-out theme, perfect for getting ready for summer AND getting that book report done on time? There are loads of crafty ways to put together a night of learning and fun for the whole family.

9. Yearbook

Yearbooks are wonderful keepsakes of your child’s year in school. Usually they are put together by devoted parents and volunteers, although later older students may have a yearbook committee. A yearbook project involves a lot of advanced planning, but usually ramps up in the spring.

10. Graduation

The biggest party of the year! It is an important job to plan a safe, healthy, fun and supervised event for students and for the community. Oftentimes a committee is formed for this purpose as well as raising funds to host the event.
Use this list to cure those spring break blues! Spring is such a celebratory time of year, there is no shortage of festivities for your local PTA. With so much to do before the end of the school year, it is impossible not to be swept up in all the fun.
